Welcome to OpenPKG.org !
...the world of cross-platform RPM-based Unix software packaging.
This is a project of the Development
Team from Cable & Wireless
Deutschland's Application Services division. The goal is
the creation and maintainance of portable and easy to install
software packages for use on the major Unix server platforms.
Currently Solaris,
Linux and FreeBSD are officially and
fully supported. Additionally, NetBSD,
OpenBSD, and
Compaq Tru64 are
unofficially and/or partly supported.
The underlying packaging technology is based on the RedHat Package Manager RPM, version 4. Nevertheless this project
is completely self-contained and does not even need a preinstallation
of RPM. Instead, RPM is provided as an OpenPKG RPM package itself plus
a tricky bootstrapping procedure in order to allow one to create from
scratch the initial state of the whole OpenPKG software packaging
system.
As of January 2002, OpenPKG consists of over 22,000 lines of polished
RPM package specifications, resulting in over 270 freely available individual packages.
You are still wondering why you should use OpenPKG and what it is good
for? If you are happy with any other packaging facility, do not waste
your time with OpenPKG, please. OpenPKG does not try to compete with or
even replace any vendor facilities -- it is an add-on to them. But if
you need an answer to one or more of the following questions, you should
give OpenPKG a try.
You have a large set of different Unix
servers to install and maintain but nevertheless want a single facility
across all platforms? You want to install an application
multiple times on a single server, for instance to give each project
their own software installation? You want to install add-on applications
the easy way by accepting mimimal operating system intrusion only?
OpenPKG is designed to solve these situations for you.
To familiarize yourself with OpenPKG's advantages, we recommend reading
the OpenPKG Slideset for a brief
overview of OpenPKG, followed by the Online
Tutorial. These resources provide details on how to use the OpenPKG
bootstrapping procedure and how to download and install the RPM packages
in OpenPKG's Package Repository. For an in depth
understanding of the principles and practices behind OpenPKG, refer to
the OpenPKG Handbook with all its
gory details.
